The NDIS Worker Screening Check is a mandatory background check for workers in certain NDIS roles. It helps protect NDIS participants from harm by identifying people who may pose a risk.
Workers requiring an NDIS Worker Screening Check include:
- Support workers providing direct support to participants
- Key personnel in registered NDIS providers
- Workers in risk-assessed roles with more than incidental contact with participants
The screening process involves:
- Checking criminal history records across all Australian states/territories
- Assessing relevant employment and disciplinary history
- Evaluating any child protection records
- Issuing a clearance or exclusion decision
Workers can apply through their state or territory screening unit. A valid clearance lasts for 5 years and must be renewed. Workers with an exclusion cannot work in risk-assessed NDIS roles.
