NDIS Worker Screening Check

« Back to Glossary Index

The NDIS Worker Screening Check is a mandatory background check for workers in certain NDIS roles. It helps protect NDIS participants from harm by identifying people who may pose a risk.

Workers requiring an NDIS Worker Screening Check include:

  • Support workers providing direct support to participants
  • Key personnel in registered NDIS providers
  • Workers in risk-assessed roles with more than incidental contact with participants

The screening process involves:

  1. Checking criminal history records across all Australian states/territories
  2. Assessing relevant employment and disciplinary history
  3. Evaluating any child protection records
  4. Issuing a clearance or exclusion decision

Workers can apply through their state or territory screening unit. A valid clearance lasts for 5 years and must be renewed. Workers with an exclusion cannot work in risk-assessed NDIS roles.
